Get Involved :: Polaroid Update

I posted a few months back looking for some Polaroid donations for my trip to Uganda/Rwanda… here’s the result!

You guys are incredible generous, this is most of what I received! I know the kids who receive pictures of themselves will love it… thank you so much!

Compassion Bloggers :: Dominican Republic

Ally just sent me a link to this, Compassion’s next bloggers trip:

November 2–7, 2008 Compassion International will take a group of bloggers to see their ministry to over 40,000 children in the Dominican Republic. Known for its resort-speckled beaches, there’s another side to this Caribbean nation unknown to most vacationers. Our bloggers will visit a city dump where families scavenge for food and clothing. They’ll tour a neighborhood where drugs are trafficked and children live beside open sewers. And bloggers will also see firsthand how Compassion International and child sponsors are bringing hope to children living in these places by releasing them from poverty in Jesus’ name.

Currently, I don’t sponsor a child with any organisation. Somehow I convinced myself that as a student/unemployed person I can’t really afford to… but I have a distinct feeling I will be starting soon. How many times do I go out for a coffee in the week? I could give up two coffees a week, or Sunday lunch out, and instead put a kid through school? Give a kid a chance to hear about Jesus? I don’t really need that coffee…

This summer I’m volunteering in Uganda with Fields of Life, who among other things provide child sponsorship. I’m excited, as I get to live out some of my dreams, while doing something worthwhile. I get to take photographs, and the charity gets new images for promotion. I love the reciprocal nature of it… somehow my pictures make a difference. I was inspired by the Uganda Compassion Bloggers, hearing firsthand stories of how Compassion/sponsorship/Jesus is making a difference in peoples lives.

It’s the nature of the Gospel. God tells stories. God invites us to be storytellers.
And I can’t wait to be part of it in Uganda, in less than 6 weeks time.

Get Involved – Polaroid!

It’s less than 8 weeks now until I leave for Uganda/Rwanda, and I’m starting to get all the little bits and pieces organised – making sure I’ve got the camera kit I need, getting insurance, that kinda thing. One of the things I am hoping to do on this trip is to shoot with Polaroid a lot. I use almost all digital right now, but I still love Polaroid! Needless to say I was very sad when they announced they are going to stop making Polaroid film next year.

I would love to be able to take pictures of the kids and families I meet using Polaroid, so I can give it to them there and then to keep. Remember the joy and excitement of watching a Polaroid print develop? I’d love to be able to give that enjoyment to kids who’ve maybe never seen or held a picture of themselves before.

That’s part of the goal of this trip: using photography to create a sense of self worth, pride and value in an otherwise unnoticed person.

I want to give you the chance to help with this!

Polaroid film is too expensive for me to buy a ton of packets myself, so I thought, what better way for you to get involved than to donate packets of Polaroid film! For every packet of film you donate, I will take 10 pictures, leaving 9 with the families and kids in Uganda, and I will send one print back to you, when I get back to the UK. Sound good?

If you’re up for it, leave a comment so I can get your email address, or drop me an email at emmaboyd87 [at] hotmail [dot] com, and I’ll email you my postal address. Not too keen on leaving it up online here for everyone to see!

Thank so much for your help!

(P.S. This was Longbrakes idea originally – thanks for letting me borrow it!)

Uganda Movie Night

Doing a little fundraising tonight for my trip to Uganda this summer – movie night at my flat. I’ll be projecting The Constant Gardener onto a wall in my room, providing some lovely folks with some lovely snacks, and they shall donate some of their monies (£2) towards my trip.

Be great to see ya there if you can make it!

Etsy Shopfront

I’ve been exploring Etsy for the last few days, and today I took the plunge of signing up and setting up a storefront.

Etsy is an online marketplace for buying & selling all things handmade.
Our mission is to enable people to make a living making things, and to reconnect makers with buyers.
Our vision is to build a new economy and present a better choice:
Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade.

I’m going to be using it to fundraise for my trip to East Africa this summer with Fields of Life. You can purchase prints of some of my photographs on my Etsy store here. Would be grateful if you would spread the word!
