“Here we are living in a world of “identity crises,” and most of us have no idea what an identity is. Half the problem is that an identity is something which must be understood intuitively, rather than in terms of provable fact. An infinite question is often destroyed by finite answers. To define everything is to annihilate much that gives us laughter and joy.”

“The nature of the spiritual life is that we are certain in our uncertainties, consequently we don’t make our nests anywhere… Certainty is the mark of the common-sense life; gracious uncertainty is the mark of the spiritual life. To be certain of God means that we are uncertain in all our ways, we don’t know what a day will bring forth.”
[Oswald Chambers]
“Many of us are afraid of taking risks in case things don’t work out well – in case we “fail”. Such concerns are legitimate, but perhaps we need to reasses what constitues “failure”. Is failure when things don’t work out as we had hoped or expected? Or is failure not having the courage to risk living out our dreams?”

“Hope begins in the dark. You wait and watch and work. You don’t give up.”

Today I bought Jon Foremans new EP, Fall. It is beautiful. You should all go buy it.
I’m not sure why it always goes downhill
Why broken cisterns never could stay filled
I’ve spent ten years singing gravity away
But the water keeps on falling from the sky
So here tonight while the stars are blacking out
With every hope and dream I’ve ever had in doubt
I’ve spent ten years trying to sing these doubts away
But the water keeps on falling from my eyes
And heaven knows, heaven knows
I try to find a cure for the pain
Oh my Lord, to suffer like you do
It would be a lie to run away…

Possibly one of my favourite songs in the world, I keep coming back to these lyrics time after time.
Teach me, Lord to have faith
In what You’re bringing me will
Change my life and bring You glory
There on the storm I am learning to let go
Of the will that I so long to control
There may I be in Your arms eternally
I thank you, Lord, You are the calmer of the storm.

Little cramped words scrawling all over
the paper
Like draggled fly’s legs,
What can you tell of the flaring moon
Through the oak leaves?
Or of my uncertain window and the
bare floor
Spattered with moonlight?
Your silly quirks and twists have nothing
in them
Of blossoming hawthorns,
And this paper is dull, crisp, smooth,
virgin of loveliness
Beneath my hand.
I am tired, Beloved, of chafing my heart
against
The want of you;
Of squeezing it into little inkdrops,
And posting it.
And I scald alone, here, under the fire
Of the great moon.
