Revived By The Kiss Of The Love

Last Monday I spent some time in the Louvre, as I mentioned in an earlier post. There are some more pictures from my Paris trip, some Louvre ones too, on my Flickr now.

One of the sculptures I was captivated by is “Psyché ranimée par le baiser de l’Amour” by Antonio Canova. (I get the feeling I like Italian art more than any others?)

This sculpture by Antonio Canova recreates the moment at which Psyche awakens from her deathly sleep by the kiss of Eros. The dynamic sculpture conveys a deep sense of love, passion and energy as Eros sweeps from the sky to awaken Psyche from her slumber. Psyche throws up her arms elegantly to receive Eros’ kiss.

There’s more background information on this sculpture here.

Offski!

I’m off travelling again! Heading to Paris early (VERY early… 6.30am flight!) tomorrow morning for four days. Lee (far left in the picture) is studying at university in Paris, so I’m going to spend some time with him, and also just enjoy being in a new city!

Taking a few books to read, my camera to take pictures, and very little money… the plan is to read, photograph, walk, and talk! I’m excited about catching up with Lee, and looking forward to having a rest too.

I’m not taking my laptop, so I probably wont blog while I’m away. I may check emails a few times, but I’m thinking about having as much of an internet-free four days as I can! So, if you don’t hear from me, don’t complain too loudly!

Newcastle / Durham / Friends

What a weekend!

I had a blast hanging out with some friends in Newcastle and Durham over the weekend. Got to spend time with one I know a bit, get to know someone I’ve only met a few times a bit more, and meet a new friend I’ve heard lots about, but never met. Much fun! We just dandered around Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, pretty place.

statue

[A random statue in Newcastle… there was a lot of stuff like this, appears to be a rather artsy place!]

I stayed in Durham on Saturday evening with the girl I’d just met that day. Durham really reminded me of Edinburgh to be honest! Lots of little winding streets and old architecture. We spent some time in prayer that night, which was intense, but can’t be shared here! If you really want to know, drop me an email and maybe I’ll share some more.

Sunday morning we went to my friends church in Newcastle, City Church. I really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it… it has a really nice family feel to it, a range of age groups. After having some lunch and coffee, we got the train back up to Glasgow. Journey takes about 2 and a half hours. From Central station we headed straight out to a church on the southside of Glasgow to chat with their youth pastor.

starbucks quality

[We ended up in Starbucks for coffee, despite my not liking it… This sign amused me… “To protect the quality of our coffee, we ask you not to smoke.”]

When I finally made it back into my flat and dumped my stuff (rucksack, sleeping bag et al), I realised just how shattered I was!

Travelling

I’m getting to travel loads at the minute… loving it.

This weekend I’m off to Newcastle to visit some friends, just a wee two day trip but will be nice to see somewhere new and hang out with friends.

Next week I’m heading back to Ireland for the Celtic Soliton Sessions, taking place in Belfast and Portrush. Excited about spending some time on the North Coast again (Portstewart is a place of great significance for me) and meeting some new friends while engaging in meaningful conversations!

After that I’ve got a few weeks in Glasgow, before I can think of somewhere else to go see… Aberdeen is next on the list I think, visit a friend and take some pictures…

Lightbulb ministry…

When we were in Holland the main thing we were involved in was an outreach with the church called Lightbulb ministry. (Just realised I’ve never said what the church was called! It’s Living Water. You can check it out an www.levendwater.nl) This was basically us going around the doors of a local area called Tanthof, giving out free lightbulbs.

The neighbourhood of Tanthof has a population of 60,000 people – roughly 10% of Delfts population – and there is no church there at all! We were not necessarily going out to get long , God conversations with people, but simply to touch them with the love of God. Over two days we gave out about 1100 lightbulbs, and had some awesome conversations. One lady even came to church!

We got to keep our funky tee-shirts too – Ist er licht in uw huis?

Holland…

Holland was amazing! I’m still kinda taking it all in, reflecting on it and working out what it really meant to me. There are so many bikes everywhere, like seriously!! I know I expected it to be flat and there to be lots of bikes, but I guess the full extent didn’t really hit me till we got there… this is the view from Leiden train station, where we had to change trains to get to Delft.

Man, I miss Delft. I had got used to cycling my wee bike around – one gear, peddle backwards to brake – and kinda gotten to know my way around too. The church gave us bikes to get around on while we were there, and i’d guess we cycled about 5 miles a day on average. We had gotten so used to cycling into the centre to have pancakes or whatever… the picture below shows the cathedral in Delft, it was so beautiful. We climbed up to the top one day and took a whole pile of pictures, I’m hoping to put together a panoramic one when I get the time.
