In the run-up to World AIDS Day next Saturday, we’re (CU social action group) putting on a free screening of a film called Dear Francis tonight. I’m really excited about this – the film is a really personal look at the impact of the HIV/AIDS virus on Swaziland – the country with the highest prevelance rate in the world. Nearly 40% of its adult population carry the disease.
HIV/AIDS seems to me to be one of those issues that isnt addressed very well by us in the West. There is lots of talk of the devastation it causes, but there doesn’t seem to be much action. To me, it seems to be an issue people don’t know what to do about in response… we feel bad, but what can we do? That’s the purpose of tonight…
Went to see Once today, finally. This film… wow. It’s a delicate, beautiful film. A portrayal of love and encouragement and finding your feet. The songs are wonderful. Glen Hansard (of The Frames) and Markéta Irglová do a really good job as leads. I love how its filmed so simply as well.
Watched this amazing flim the other night with my flatmate Rosie. It’s written and directed by the same guy who made Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, one of my favourite films. It’s such a superb little quirky film, I loved it. I really like that artsy, thinking kinda film (like Eternal Sunshine, and Punch Drunk Love). There were some genuis quotes, some quite profound as well…
Stephane: Tonight I’ll show you how dreams are prepared, love, friendships, relationships. All those ships.
Stephane: The brain is such an amazing organism, and it sits just behind your nose! (Couldn’t quite re
Stéphanie: Everything will turn out the way you want, if you stop doubting that I love you.
Stéphanie: Why me?
Stephane: Because everyone else is boring. And because you are different.
“It’s the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We’re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something.”

Watching Crash again tonight. One of the best films I’ve ever seen… plotlines interweave, twists and turns, great acting, fantastic concept. Love it.
I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind last night, was the first time I’ve seen right to the end of the film… I would add, it helps a lot! I love the film, it’s such a superbly crafted story. Gives Jim Carrey a chance to shine outside of his usual goof-ball type-comedy, which he does. And of course, the quote from which it takes it’s title is one of my favourites.
How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
