The Rescue

Caught a screening of the new Invisible Children movie tonight, “The Rescue”. Being reminded that I left a big chunk of my heart in Uganda last summer. That whole region just tugs on me so hard. I’m gonna write more soon, but for now go to the IC website, check out what they’re up to, and get involved.

I’m putting together a screening of the movie in a few weeks, and I’ll be at the event on April 25. Mark the date and come join me.

Join the Rescue.

Denying The Resurrection

Without equivocation or hesitation I fully and completely admit that I deny the resurrection of Christ. This is something that anyone who knows me could tell you, and I am not afraid to say it publicly, no matter what some people may think…

I deny the resurrection of Christ every time I do not serve at the feet of the oppressed, each day that I turn my back on the poor; I deny the resurrection of Christ when I close my ears to the cries of the downtrodden and lend my support to an unjust and corrupt system.

However there are moments when I affirm that resurrection, few and far between as they are. I affirm it when I stand up for those who are forced to live on their knees, when I speak for those who have had their tongues torn out, when I cry for those who have no more tears left to shed.

Coventry Climate Change Day Of Action

A few weeks ago I was in Coventry with work for the Climate Change Day Of Action…

You can still get involved, even if you couldn’t make it along on the day!

1. Take the Copenhagen pledge
2. Say no to coal!
3. Find out more about Countdown to Copenhagen

I got to work alongside the photo unit on the day, trying to document the march and the day as it progressed. There are photos in this flickr set. Here’s a few of my favourites…

Lyrics On Friday

Listening to Kings of Leon ‘Only By The Night’ album this week. Some amazing songs..

I’ve been roaming around
Always looking down at all I see
Painted faces, building places I cant reach

You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody

Someone like you, And all you know, And how you speak
Countless lovers under cover of the street

You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody
Someone like you

Off in the night, while you live it up, I’m off to sleep
Waging wars to shape the poet and the beat
I hope it’s gonna make you notice
I hope it’s gonna make you notice

Someone like me
Someone like me
Someone like me, somebody

I’m ready now
I’m ready now
I’m ready now
I’m ready now
I’m ready now
I’m ready now
I’m ready now

Someone like you, somebody
Someone like you, somebody
Someone like you, somebody

I’ve been roaming around,
Always looking down at all I see

Remember & Hope

On Sunday I had a relaxed morning; didn’t quite make it to join my church family for worship so I did my own thing… I went for a walk in the park, listened to some music, and spent time in Psalm 42.

Truth is, I haven’t been feeding myself like I should be; haven’t been in the Word like I know I should & want to be. This is my attempt at starting over! I thought I’d share some of my reflections on the passage. Feel free to jump in and comment too!

My tears have been my food day and night, (v.3)

This got me thinking… is the Psalmist making a statement, or is there something more profound going on here? Are the tears actually sustaining and nourishing him through this? What would it look like if that was true, if they somehow actually feed me, sustained me?

Why are you cast down, O my soul…
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, (v. 5)

Hope is a CHOICE. Such confidence that God will come through.

My soul is cast down within me;
therefore I remember you (v. 6)

The remedy is to REMEMBER. When the darkness seems to overwhelm, remember all the times that have come before and how God has pulled through for me. I actually started writing a list; I needed to start thinking through it all so that I could remember… specific friendships, repeated financial provision, a holiday, a good cup of coffee, Foys gig in Belfast (don’t let the spirit die Lord)… the list could go on forever!

By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,
and at night his song is with me, (v.8 )

His love never leaves me. He is faithful to the end. What does it mean for his song to be with me?

Can you hear his song? Can you hear the refrain?

Remember, and hope.

Books

I’ve been a terrible reader recently, switching and swapping my books constantly… Here’s what I am/ have been/ kinda am reading currently…

jPod, by Douglas Coupland
It’s official. I love Douglas Coupland. jPod is witty, sarcastic and terribly funny… I’m loving it!

The Photography Reader, edited by Liz Wells
This is good, but difficult. It’s extracts from various important writings on photography & theory. I’ve been searching for ways to improve my photography, and I think understanding some of the theory and criticism would help me

Travel Writing, by L. Peat O’Neil
Been discovering more and more how much I really enjoy writing, and particularly the branch known as ‘travel writing’. I love taking all the bits and pieces of an experience – the sounds, the smells, the sights, the emotions – and crafting a piece of writing that takes the reader there.

The Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman et al
Chris is giving me an introduction to comics. So far I’ve been enthralled by the Ex Machina series. Gaiman is Chris’ favourite writer, and I’ve read part of his latest book (The Graveyard). Am enjoying Sandman so far; albeit not as much as Ex Machina.

1984, by George Orwell
I’ve been terrible with this one… keep starting it, then getting distracted by something else and setting it aside… as I have done again! I will get to it eventually, I promise.

What are you reading?

Lyrics On Friday

I’m a big fan of the Fray, and have been going back to their newest album again and again. Their song ‘You Found Me’ has been the soundtrack to my week, the song that I’ve been singing in my head every day as I wander around.

I found god
On the corner of first and Amistad
Where the west was all but won
All alone, smoking his last cigarette
I Said where you been, he said ask anything
Where were you?
When everything was falling apart
All my days were spent by the telephone
It never rang
And all I needed was a call
That never came
To the corner of first and Amistad

Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me

In the end everyone ends up alone
Losing her, the only one who’s ever known
Who I am, who I’m not, who I want to be
No way to know how long she will be next to me

Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me

Early morning, City breaks
I’ve been calling for years and years and years and years
And you never left me no messages
You never send me no letters
You got some kind of nerve, taking all I want

Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Where were you where were you

Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me

Why’d you have to wait?
To find me, to find me

What’s been running through your head this week?

iPhone OS 3.0

Finally got around to watching all of the iPhone OS 3.0 keynote this afternoon… yes, I’m that geeky…

iphone-os-3

I’d heard bits and pieces from it, and got excited as it seemed to be addressing some of the issues I have with the iPhone…

  • Ability to delete & forward individual text messages
  • VCard contact support
  • Cut, copy & paste
  • MMS
  • Much better search capabilities
  • Ability to read & create email in landscape

Shame it’s going to be the summer before it’s available, but it looks like it will make my iPhone experience much much better. How about you, what do you think? What’s still missing?

Bush :: The Only Magic

I’ve been reading Steven Bush’s blog for a while now, and wanted to highlight it to ya a bit… he writes well, he takes the most immense photographs, he has a massive heart for adoption, and for justice for the poor. He recently went to Haiti with Compassion, and following his story has been enlightening.

A few days ago Bush posted about one of his photographs, which is up for sale. ‘The Only Magic I Still Believe In Is Love’ is limited to 150 prints, is on sale for $25, and all the proceeds are going to the Abba Fund.

believeinlove

“This world is a dark and broken place. It is full of hurt and dying people that are imprisoned by the merciless enemy of poverty. Wars, hate, racism, religion, hunger, poverty, and greed encompass a fallen world full of fallen men. There is a lack of faith, hope, and love. There is a need for restoration and renewal. There is a need for justice and change. Many live as if there is nothing left to hope in. Many live as if there is nothing left good to believe in. I have to believe that there is good left in people. I have to believe that we can make a difference. I have to believe that we can bring change to this broken world. I have to believe in justice. I have to believe that there is hope. I have to believe in love.”

Check it out.
